The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and North Carolina State Parks are excited to announce the Dragonfly Detectives: A Citizen Science Experience for afterschool program participants in grades 4 – 8. This exciting new grant funded program will engage students one day a week for six weeks in scientific research focusing on dragonflies. The program is designed to: transform students into citizen scientists; actively engage them in environmental fieldwork to study dragonflies; conduct scientific research, data collection and analysis; provide opportunities for them to share their findings with other students and adults; and learn what it takes to pursue a career in the sciences.
Sessions will begin as early as April 6, 2015. Each 6-week session is open to 15 students and their chaperone(s). Transportation to and from a local State Park is provided. This opportunity is currently available to afterschool program participants in the following counties: Beaufort, Columbus, Gates, Wake, and Wayne. Opportunities such as this help after-school and expanded learning programs re-invent the learning day. The engagement with strong partners (NC Museum of Natural Sciences and NC State Parks) helps contribute to students and educators increasing their STEM knowledge, skills, and abilities. We encourage programs to apply in the selected areas mentioned above. To apply, please fill out the online application for Dragonfly Detectives at: http://goo.gl/718zrd
